🐝 What if a team could lose any single person and keep functioning — because no one was ever a single point of failure?

For the past few years I’ve been digging into Evolutionary Biology, AI, and Philosophy, and one thing keeps showing up: some of the most resilient, adaptive systems in nature aren’t led at all. They’re swarms.

Not because Scrum or Agile are broken — they’re not, and they’ve earned their place. But I started wondering: what would a team framework look like if it borrowed its logic from swarm intelligence instead of project management?

Three principles instead of command and control:

🔹 Decentralized — no single person steering the team
🔹 Self-organizing — the team manages and corrects itself
🔹 Distributed — knowledge and ability spread across everyone, not siloed in specialists

Fluid roles. No hierarchy. One organism: the team.

This isn’t just theory. I’ve been prototyping it as an actual game: Swarm Cards. Each cycle, people draw a “swarm card” (e.g., Mentor, Scout, Bridge, Scribe), a rotating lens that shifts how they already work, not an extra task. The point isn’t the cards themselves, it’s what they force: knowledge and responsibility constantly moving away from silos and back into the collective.

Winning looks different too. You win when the team can lose any one member and keep functioning, because intelligence was never concentrated in the first place.

I’d love for teams from every industry or domain to actually try this, not just read about it. Try a cycle with your team and share what you learn in the comments: what worked, what broke, what you’d change.

Evolve the swarm.
